On Monday, a powerful earthquake struck western Colombia, collapsing buildings and leaving an unconfirmed number of people dead and trapped under rubble. The disaster came on the first business day of President Abelardo De La Espriella’s term and follows two devastating quakes in neighboring Venezuela in June that killed more than 6,000 people.

Latin America has a long and tragic history of deadly earthquakes. The region sits on a tangle of active faults where the Nazca, South American, and Caribbean plates grind against one another, generating some of the world’s most destructive seismic events. Even moderate magnitudes have caused catastrophic loss of life when they hit unprepared urban centers.

Among the deadliest: the 2010 Haiti earthquake, only magnitude 7.0, struck the densely populated capital Port-au-Prince, where flimsy construction and weak disaster services led to an estimated 220,000 deaths. In 1868, a series of quakes culminating in a 7.7 tremor killed about 70,000 people across Ecuador and Colombia. A massive 1970 submarine quake off Peru unleashed a glacial landslide that buried the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca at over 200 mph, killing nearly 20,000 in Yungay alone.

Chile, despite its modern seismic codes, suffered its deadliest quake in 1939 at Chillán, where adobe construction and a lack of engineering led to around 30,000 deaths. A 1976 earthquake in Guatemala, hitting at 3 a.m., ravaged 100,000 square kilometers, left 1.2 million homeless, and destroyed two-fifths of the country’s hospitals. In 1861, a tremor destroyed Mendoza, Argentina, and gas lamps sparked fires that burned for days, fueling looting. These events, though distant, still shape how the region prepares for the next big one.

The primary driver is the constant collision of tectonic plates. The Nazca plate dives beneath South America, building the Andes and triggering frequent megathrust quakes. The Caribbean plate adds complexity across Central America and the northern tier, guaranteeing a high rate of strong earthquakes.

Yet the death tolls are not solely a function of magnitude. Construction practices repeatedly emerge as the critical factor. The 1939 Chillán disaster prompted Chile to adopt its first seismic building code, a model now widely praised. In contrast, Haiti in 2010 had little such infrastructure; concrete and adobe homes collapsed easily. The 1797 Riobamba earthquake in Ecuador flattened entire cities because of adobe and poor design. Even today, in many parts of the region, lax enforcement of modern codes means that the next major quake will again test whether lessons have truly been learned.

Rapid urbanization in seismically active zones also heightens risk. The 1976 Guatemala earthquake struck a densely populated area, crippling 40% of hospitals and overwhelming emergency services. As Latin American cities grow, the challenge is not merely forecasting the shaking but ensuring that buildings, hospitals, and response systems can withstand it.
