USAA and Alamo Trust Launch $5 Million Revitalization Effort
USAA, the San Antonio–based financial services company founded by Army officers in 1922, has partnered with the Alamo Trust to restore and enhance one of America's most iconic historic sites. The $5 million contribution will transform the Paseo del Alamo—the pedestrian link between the San Antonio River Walk and Alamo Plaza—and add two new features: a public military mural by a local artist and an onsite military lounge within the visitor center.
The project is part of the larger, $700 million Alamo Plan, launched in 2023 to create a world-class experience around the 300-year-old mission and the 1836 battlefield. USAA’s involvement was announced after months of conversations involving state and local leaders, including Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Alamo Trust President Esperanza “Hope” Andrade, as well as USAA CEO Juan Andrade.
“It’s certainly honoring the military legacy here in our hometown, but it’s also further redeveloping an area of San Antonio that needs it,” said Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, USAA’s head of corporate impact. The company employs about 16,000 people in the city, roughly half its workforce, and has deep ties to the region’s military identity.
Why the Alamo–USAA Partnership Matters for San Antonio
A Partnership Built on Shared Military History
The Alamo’s story is inseparable from the U.S. Army, and San Antonio brands itself as “Military City USA.” USAA’s origin—25 Army officers who couldn’t get car insurance—makes the alliance more than a sponsorship; it is a direct extension of the company’s founding mission. The decision to create a dedicated military lounge on site, where service members and veterans can rest and access financial education resources, reinforces that identity.
Tourism and Civic Pride
San Antonio’s economy leans heavily on tourism, amplified by the Alamo’s UNESCO World Heritage designation. The Paseo del Alamo connector is already complete, and the additional investments are designed to draw more foot traffic while improving the visitor experience. The partnership also signals to other potential corporate donors that the Alamo Plan has momentum, which could accelerate the remaining capital campaign.
What Visitors Can Expect from the Ongoing Restoration
For visitors, the timeline remains fluid pending permits, but USAA expects the mural to be unveiled by the end of 2026 and the military lounge to open in the first quarter of 2027. The River Walk–Alamo connector is already open. Once completed, the lounge will offer a quiet space with financial education resources for active-duty personnel and veterans, while the mural will add a new focal point celebrating the city’s military heritage.
