When a US Warship Mistook a Planet for a Japanese Weapon
In February 1945, as the US Navy steamed toward the pivotal invasion of Iwo Jima, the battleship USS New York (BB-34) spotted a glowing object apparently shadowing the formation. Without radar identification and fearing a new Japanese aerial weapon, the captain gave the order to engage. The ship’s 20‑millimeter, 40‑millimeter and 3‑inch anti‑aircraft guns all trained on the target; a nearby destroyer joined the barrage.
Only after the ship’s navigator arrived at the bridge was the truth revealed: the crew had been firing at Venus, the brightest planet in the night sky. Embarrassing as it was, the Navy took no disciplinary action—the incident was chalked up to wartime nerves, clear Pacific skies and the planet’s extraordinary brilliance.
The same misidentification occurred months later at the secret Los Alamos laboratory, where scientists preparing for the Trinity nuclear test were already on edge over Japanese balloon bombs. When a brilliant object appeared above the base, Army Air Forces fighters were scrambled before an astronomer finally identified it as, once again, Venus.
These episodes are not isolated. Venus’s thick sulfuric‑acid clouds reflect roughly 75 percent of incoming sunlight, making it brighter than any star and sometimes visible even in daylight. Under the stress of war, observers repeatedly interpreted the planet according to their fears: a divine omen for Napoleon’s Paris, a celestial sign at Lincoln’s second inauguration and, in the 20th century, a hostile weapon or UFO.

Human cognition under duress then fills in the blanks: what is ambiguous becomes whatever the observer most fears at that moment—enemy aircraft, an intruder balloon or a UFO.
From Wartime Scares to Modern UFO Reports
The same optical tricks confound pilots and ground observers today. Because Venus and Earth come near each other about every 19 months, the planet regularly reappears bright and low in twilight skies, generating fresh reports of unidentified aerial phenomena. Even with modern radar and infrared sensors, a single bright point of light can overwhelm human pattern‑recognition, especially when tension is high. The Los Alamos scramble in 1945 and the Pacific gunnery incident underline a persistent truth: technology changes, but the perceptual traps created by a brilliant planet do not.
