FGTS Profit Credits Begin July 31: What Workers Need to Know

Starting Friday, July 31, Caixa Econômica Federal will credit R$13.04 billion—89% of the FGTS's 2025 profit—to 138.2 million workers who held balances in their accounts as of December 31, 2025. The per-worker amount is calculated by multiplying the December 31 balance by 0.0186834. For instance, a balance of R$1,000 will receive R$18.68, and the credit scales proportionally.

This distribution is mandated by a Supreme Court ruling that requires FGTS accounts to at least keep pace with inflation, measured by the IPCA. In 2025, the IPCA was 4.26%, so the profit credit adds 1.87 percentage points to the basic return, lifting the total effective yield to 6.90%. That translates to a real gain of 2.53 percentage points above inflation.

Importantly, the profit credit does not alter the existing rules for withdrawing FGTS funds. Workers can only access the total balance under standard conditions—such as dismissal without just cause, home purchase, or other specific life events. The credit is deposited directly into each linked account, and if a worker has multiple accounts from different jobs, the credit is calculated separately for each.

Why This Year's FGTS Distribution Matters—and What It Doesn't Change

The FGTS profit distribution highlights the fund's dual role as a forced savings tool and a source of low-cost housing finance. While the 6.90% return for 2025 is a real improvement, it remains modest compared to market alternatives. The STF's inflation-floor requirement ensures that workers' savings do not erode in real terms, but the structure limits liquidity. For the government and Caixa, distributing R$13.04 billion reinforces the social contract of the FGTS while directing substantial resources into the housing and infrastructure sectors through the fund's lending operations.

The credit's proportional design means workers with larger balances gain the most, but because withdrawals remain restricted, the effective benefit is only realized when a qualifying event occurs. This underscores the importance of understanding how the FGTS fits into broader household finances.

How to Check Your FGTS Balance and Understand Your Credit

  • Check your FGTS balance through the official Caixa website or the FGTS app using your worker registration.
  • To estimate your credit, multiply the balance you held on December 31, 2025, by 0.0186834. For example, a balance of R$5,000 would yield about R$93.42.
  • Remember that the credit is added to your account but cannot be withdrawn separately; normal withdrawal rules apply only when you qualify (e.g., job loss, home purchase).
  • If you have multiple accounts from different employers, the credit is calculated for each one. Check all your accounts to see the total benefit.
