Some holidaymakers still keep one restaurant evening to mark the end of the week, but the default meal choice has moved outdoors and toward cheaper formats.

Accommodation and transport are harder to adjust once booked, so meals become the obvious lever. A restaurant dinner for a family can easily exceed €100; a market picnic or traiteur lunch brings the same occasion down to €10–€20 per couple or €19 for six, according to the examples in the report.

Gira conseil's attendance data suggests the substitution is already visible beyond this survey: the restaurant sector is seeing weaker footfall even as holiday traffic continues. The beneficiaries are market stalls, traiteurs and food shops near tourist areas, which capture demand for fast, lower-cost meals. The interpretation here is that price resistance, not lack of appetite for eating out, is driving the change; several interviewees say they still choose restaurant evenings for special moments.
