How NBB's New Multi-Currency Debit Card Works
The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has launched a multi-currency debit card feature for customers holding Express Saver savings accounts. Through the NBB App, account holders can link up to eight foreign currencies to a single debit card and use it for payments abroad and online shopping without converting each transaction at the point of sale.
The supported currencies include the US Dollar, British Pound, Euro, and major GCC currencies such as the Saudi Riyal, Qatari Riyal, Omani Riyal, Kuwaiti Dinar, and UAE Dirham. Customers can fund their accounts in local currency through the app, link the funds to their debit card, and then pay directly in the destination currency. NBB says the feature is designed for frequent travellers and students studying abroad, and that no card replacement is needed for existing Express Saver debit cardholders.
Subah Abdullatif Al Zayani, Chief Executive for Retail Banking at NBB, said the feature lets clients "pay like a local abroad" while managing multiple currencies through a single card. The launch is part of the bank's push to improve customer convenience and increase digital adoption in its retail banking business.
What the Multi-Currency Card Changes for NBB and Its Customers
What the Feature Actually Changes
From a household finance perspective, the key advantage is avoiding currency conversion at the moment of payment. Instead of paying an exchange fee or markup on every foreign transaction, the customer loads money into a designated currency balance in advance and spends from that balance. That can make pricing abroad more predictable, especially for students and travellers who already know roughly what they will spend.
The open question is the cost of loading. NBB has not disclosed what exchange rate or fee applies when customers fund a foreign currency balance from Bahraini dinars. The benefit depends entirely on that spread, so customers should compare it against the conversion fees on their current card before assuming the feature saves money.
Why NBB Is Pushing This Now
The launch fits a broader pattern in Gulf retail banking: banks are competing to attract younger, mobile-first customers with app-based products that reduce friction for cross-border spending. NBB, which describes itself as Bahrain's first locally owned bank, is using the feature to differentiate its digital offering and deepen its relationship with customers who travel or study abroad. For a retail bank, multi-currency cards also encourage customers to keep more balances within the bank, since those balances must be funded in advance.
Using the NBB Multi-Currency Card: What to Check First
- Check whether the eight supported currencies cover the destinations you actually travel to or shop from; the card only removes conversion fees for those currencies.
- Compare NBB's load-time exchange rate and any loading fee against the foreign transaction fee on your current debit or credit card before relying on the feature for large purchases.
- Use the NBB App to fund the currency you need shortly before travel, so you can lock in a rate rather than being exposed to on-the-day market moves when spending.
- Confirm how the card handles transactions in currencies you have not loaded, as those may still convert at the point of sale with additional fees.
- Since no card replacement is required, the feature should be available immediately to existing Express Saver debit cardholders through the app.
