A Veteran’s Third-Party Bid for Florida’s 14th District

Brian Lambert, a 20-year Navy veteran, is running as a Libertarian candidate for Florida’s 14th Congressional District, a seat held by Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor. In an exclusive interview with Military.com, Lambert said his oath to support and defend the Constitution drove him to run, even though he is aware of the long odds facing a third-party candidate.

Lambert served as an aviation structural mechanic and flight engineer on E-2 and E-6B aircraft, later moving into intelligence at U.S. Central Command in Tampa. After retiring as an E-6, he and his family spent five years traveling the country in an RV, visiting 22 national parks while his wife worked as a mobile registered nurse.

On the campaign trail, Lambert is centering his platform on veterans: protecting earned benefits, shrinking VA bureaucracy, expanding community care and demanding accountability. He also wants to address the veteran suicide crisis, calling it a moral failing of the current system. “You see all the things that are going on… our children deserve better,” he said.

Lambert’s message extends to Florida-specific issues such as rapid over-development straining infrastructure and skyrocketing homeowners’ insurance costs. He also criticized the ongoing war in Iran, citing its impact on oil prices and the financial burden on families in his district, which includes a high concentration of military personnel.

Lambert’s veteran-centric platform taps into long-standing frustrations with the VA. He wants to reduce bureaucratic hurdles that delay care and expand access to private community providers. The suicide crisis, which claims far too many veterans annually, is for him a litmus test of government competence. While his proposals echo bipartisan calls for reform, his Libertarian framing leans on decentralizing decision-making and reducing federal overreach.

Local Florida Issues: Development and Insurance Costs

The candidate links national defense spending with local economic pain, noting that war in Iran pushes up oil prices and, in turn, grocery and gas costs. He also challenges local leaders over what he calls irresponsible over-development in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, arguing that emergency services are already stretched. The spiraling cost of homeowners insurance, a statewide crisis, is another pocketbook issue Lambert says Washington has ignored.

The Challenge as a Libertarian Candidate

Lambert acknowledges his campaign will be outspent by the major parties and is relying on door-knocking, social media and self-built websites. In a district that has been comfortably Democratic, his path to victory is narrow. Yet his presence could force the incumbent and eventual challenger to address veterans’ mental health and infrastructure complaints more concretely, especially in a district with a substantial military and veteran population.
