Shehzad Poonawalla, the national spokesperson of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has triggered widespread speculation about his political future after his X (formerly Twitter) bio was updated to remove all mention of the BJP. The revised bio now describes him simply as a “lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” with no reference to party affiliation. The change was noticed on Thursday, but neither Poonawalla nor the BJP has issued any statement confirming a resignation.
The online chatter accelerated because Poonawalla’s earlier posts have recently resurfaced. In one video, originally from January 2025, he argued that public service need not be limited to electoral politics and that people can contribute meaningfully without holding office. Another clip, first shared on 28 June and reposted on Thursday, showed him stating that he had planned to leave active politics after the 2024 general election but stayed on for a series of state elections. The caption accompanying the repost — “I'm already 2 years late on this..” — was widely interpreted as a fresh signal that he may be stepping away.
Poonawalla joined the BJP in 2017 after leaving the Congress and quickly rose to prominence as a combative television panellist. His vocal defence of Prime Minister Modi and sharp criticism of Congress leaders, especially Rahul Gandhi, made him one of the party’s most visible faces in media debates. While the bio change is currently just a social media signal, it has drawn additional attention because of a parallel development: his brother, political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla, recently criticised the government on student protests and fuel policy, adding a layer of family-related narrative to the online speculation.
