Product Debut Aims to Ease a Persistent Data Centre Bottleneck
USG Corporation, the manufacturer behind the Sheetrock brand, is set to reveal a new offering specifically engineered to reduce the time and disruption caused by rework inside operational data halls. The company plans to demonstrate the solution on 12–13 August at Bisnow’s Data Center Investment Conference & Expo South in Arlington, Texas.
Travis Tomanek, head of sales for USG’s Mission Critical Solutions, described the innovation as a direct response to feedback from construction partners who struggle with the logistics of returning to a completed facility to perform repairs or modifications. “This solution addresses one of the biggest problems in a data hall,” Tomanek said in a pre-event interview, noting that it covers both accelerated deployment and improved installation efficiency, though he withheld technical specifics ahead of the launch.
The announcement lands as the US market faces unrelenting pressure to deliver new data centre capacity. With roughly 1,500 facilities in the pipeline, construction teams are racing against schedules where every hour of operational delay can represent a seven-figure opportunity cost for owners. Tomanek highlighted a case where a contractor stood to earn millions in bonuses just for opening a month early, illustrating the economic weight behind faster build-out.
Where the Solution Fits in a High-Stakes Market
A Product Built on Customer Feedback
The development path of USG’s new product underscores a broader shift among building materials companies. Rather than selling commodity products, manufacturers are increasingly acting as design- and engineering-oriented partners that help contractors solve process bottlenecks. The upcoming solution was born from conversations with clients who described the time, cost and coordination headache of having to “go back and remove something they’ve already done,” Tomanek said.
Data centre owners can reportedly generate between $1 million and $2 million per hour once a facility is energised, a number that helps explain the industry’s willingness to pay a premium for anything that compresses construction schedules. If USG’s innovation meaningfully reduces the need for rework – a recurring pain point in tightly sequenced data hall fit-outs – it could carve out a niche in a market where speed often outweighs upfront material cost. As is common with pre-launch claims, the real-world impact remains unverified until the product is used at scale, but the vendor’s positioning as a “building science expert” signals an ambition to move beyond transactional relationships with general contractors and hyperscale clients.
