Why Strong AI Earnings Are No Longer Enough for Investors
Artificial intelligence demand is not the problem. The real vulnerability in the AI infrastructure boom is how it is being paid for. Alphabet, Meta and other hyperscalers are spending enormous sums on data centers, chips, servers and power, but that spending increasingly runs through debt, private credit and investor confidence rather than operating cash flow.
The shift was visible in Alphabet's second-quarter report. Revenue rose 24 percent to $119.8 billion, Google Cloud grew 82 percent to $24.8 billion, and operating margin reached 34 percent. Yet shares fell about 5 percent after Alphabet lifted its expected 2026 capital spending to between $195 billion and $205 billion, above the roughly $188 billion analysts had modeled. In the same quarter, Alphabet spent more than $44.9 billion on data centers and equipment against $39.1 billion of operating cash flow, leaving negative free cash flow of roughly $5.9 billion.
To fund the gap, Alphabet nearly doubled its long-term debt from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion and raised $49.6 billion by issuing new shares. Similar math is spreading across the sector: Bridgewater estimates Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft will spend about $650 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, up from $410 billion in 2025. Goldman Sachs estimates that 92 percent of hyperscaler operating cash flow is now being reinvested into these projects, while the share used for buybacks has fallen from about 43 percent in early 2023 to 16 percent.
Those numbers do not prove a crash is coming, but they explain why the debate has moved from whether AI will be widely used to whether the financing behind it can hold together long enough for revenues to catch up.

Alphabet's Results Show Investors Have Stopped Rewarding AI Spending
Investor reaction to Alphabet's quarter marks a clear change in sentiment. A year or two ago, higher capital spending was read as confidence in the AI opportunity. Now the same spending is being treated as a claim on a hypothetical set of future cash flows. The 5 percent share-price decline after a strong revenue report is the concrete evidence: the market is no longer pricing AI promise as automatically positive.
This matters because the biggest AI companies occupy a large share of public markets. The Magnificent Seven represented 32.5 percent of the S&P 500 in July 2026, according to data cited in the article. A broad repricing of that group would hit active investors, index funds and retirement accounts, not just AI specialists.
Private Credit and Special-Purpose Vehicles Are Moving Risk Off the Visible Balance Sheet
The Bank for International Settlements has documented a shift from operating cash flow toward debt, private credit and off-balance-sheet financing. In practice, that means a separate vehicle borrows to build a data center and leases it back to the technology company, creating a debt-like obligation without ordinary corporate borrowing on the main company's balance sheet.
The demand data points are already weakening. Six AI issuers sold $182 billion of investment-grade bonds through mid-July 2026, hyperscaler debt exceeded $360 billion, and AI-related high-yield issuance reached $31.9 billion. Several bonds later traded below their issue prices, and investor demand for new bonds fell from more than five times the amount offered in February to below two times in July. Lenders are becoming more selective even while the headline spending numbers keep rising.
CoreWeave Shows How Contracts Can Mask Borrower Weakness
CoreWeave is the clearest example of the new structure. In the first quarter of 2026 it reported negative free cash flow of about $4.7 billion and total debt near $24.9 billion, yet planned $30 billion to $35 billion of capital spending in 2026 against only about $8.7 billion of expected operating cash flow.
One $8.5 billion facility received investment-grade debt financing because it was supported by a $14.2 billion agreement with Meta. Lenders effectively assessed Meta's credit standing rather than CoreWeave's. Nvidia also agreed to purchase unused capacity and committed more than $40 billion to AI equity investments in early 2026, including $30 billion tied to OpenAI. These arrangements can optimize AI supply chains, but they also concentrate risk among a small group of interconnected companies while making the underlying borrower's weakness harder to see.
Credit Markets Would Likely Crack Before AI Revenue Does
The financing chain has a natural order: operating cash, corporate debt, private credit or special-purpose vehicles, and equity. Each layer is becoming more expensive. A correction would therefore probably begin in bond or private-credit deals, forcing management to reduce guidance and then lower valuations, rather than beginning as an unexplained stock-market crash.
The current indicators sit at an early warning stage. Bond demand has fallen, borrowing spreads have widened, and private-credit structures are expanding, but demand for AI services remains strong. Google Cloud reported $514 billion of backlog, CoreWeave reported $99.4 billion, and Anthropic reached a $14 billion annualized revenue run rate. If revenue keeps growing quickly enough, the infrastructure could still be absorbed profitably.
Depreciation Schedules Could Hit Margins in 2027 and 2028
Another delayed risk is accounting. AI servers and networking equipment are usually depreciated over five or six years, but rapid development means their useful lives may be closer to two or three years. Amazon has already shortened the useful life of some servers and networking equipment from six years to five. If more hyperscalers follow, tens of billions of dollars in depreciation expense that is currently postponed will compress margins in 2027 and 2028, just as spending from 2025 and 2026 starts to appear in the income statement.
What to Watch Before the AI Credit Crunch Arrives
