Ather’s Connected Fleet Powers Real-Time Pothole Alerts

Electric two-wheeler maker Ather Energy has begun rolling out ‘Pothole+ Alerts’ to its Gen 2 and above scooters, including the 450 Apex, 450X and Rizta Z. The feature draws on anonymised road intelligence gathered over years from every connected Ather scooter, now large enough to map out potholes, broken road sections, uneven surfaces and speed breakers along navigation routes.

CEO Tarun Mehta described the project as nearly nine years in the making. “The challenge was never the idea. It was the data,” he said. Every scooter Ather sells is equipped with onboard compute and connectivity, turning the entire fleet into a distributed sensor network that passively collects road condition data.

When a rider uses the scooters’ navigation, warnings appear on the dashboard and are also delivered as audio messages through the built-in speaker, the Ather Halo smart helmet, or any paired Bluetooth headset. The aim is to alert riders without forcing them to take their eyes off the road.

Pothole alerts are a direct product of Ather’s investment in a connected platform. As more scooters report bumps and vibrations, the aggregated dataset becomes richer and alerts become more precise. This feedback loop — where every ride improves the system for all users — is a classic network effect, but one that requires a critical mass of devices to be useful. Mehta’s remark about the nine-year wait underscores just how much road coverage was needed before the feature could go live.

Most electric two-wheeler makers still ship vehicles as standalone products. Ather’s approach turns each scooter into a sensor that collectively improves safety for the entire owner base. This creates a software-defined moat: even if a rival announced a similar feature tomorrow, it would lack the years of real-world fleet data needed to match Ather’s road intelligence. In a market where hardware can be copied, owning a data advantage that compounds over time is a genuine differentiator.
