Honor Robot Phone: A 200MP Camera on a Motorized Arm

Honor has turned a long-running camera concept into a real product. The company formally unveiled the Honor Robot Phone, a device built around a 200-megapixel main camera mounted on a small motorized arm that unfolds from the back of the phone and can move the camera through almost 360 degrees. When the mechanism is not in use, the camera sits inside the rear module like a conventional smartphone shooter.

The phone is entering China first. Pre-orders opened on 12 August and official sales begin on 18 August. Two configurations are listed: 12 GB RAM with 512 GB storage at 9,999 yuan, or about €1,285, and 16 GB RAM with 1 TB storage at 12,999 yuan, or about €1,670. Honor says it has no plans to release the device in Europe.

The rest of the package is flagship-class: a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display with up to 120 Hz refresh, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a silicon-carbon battery of 7,060 mAh with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging, plus a 200MP periscope telephoto camera with 2.7x optical zoom, a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP front camera. The trade-off is physical: the Robot Phone is 9.6 mm thick and weighs 248 grams.

The Robot Phone's motorized arm is a deliberate hardware bet. Honor describes more than 100 precision components, over 60 production processes and a titanium motor weighing just 2.6 grams. The pitch is to merge three devices into one: a flagship phone, an AI assistant and a compact gimbal-action camera. The company is also using its first product from the ARRI partnership, with a color pipeline aimed at professional grading in software such as DaVinci Resolve. Motorized smartphone cameras are not new. Oppo and Vivo have experimented with moving mechanisms for years, but Honor is pushing the idea much further: using motorized movement to make the main camera autonomously detect, track and follow people or objects, rather than simply improving stabilization or zoom hardware. Oppo's Find X9 Ultra has already made mobile photography a focus this year. Honor's launch suggests that after a period dominated by foldables, software and performance gains, camera hardware is again becoming a visible field of differentiation.

Because Honor says there are no plans to bring the Robot Phone to Europe, the first generation will probably remain a demonstration of what is possible rather than a device that reshapes the mass market.
