FAA's Plan to Replace Widespread Ground Stops With AI-Guided Routing

The Federal Aviation Administration plans to begin rolling out AI software in September that is designed to help aircraft navigate around severe weather instead of imposing the broad ground stops that now paralyze hubs during summer storms, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a CBS News interview.

Duffy described the current system as a “meat-cleaver” approach: when thunderstorms move through a region, traffic is shut down across the affected area. The new software, he said, would help controllers and airline staff identify safer tracks through or around weather systems, allowing more flights to keep moving.

The rollout will be slow and phased. Duffy said testing will start in “very confined areas” before the system goes live in air traffic control towers nationwide, with full deployment expected by next spring. That means the reliability gains he is promising would arrive for the summer 2027 travel season, not the current one.
