Why Audi's Largest-Ever Vehicle Can't Fit in London

Audi has unveiled the Q9, a new flagship SUV that the brand itself calls “the largest Audi of all time.” The numbers bear that out: 5.31 metres long, 2.21 metres wide and 1.81 metres tall. That length is around 50 cm more than a standard UK parking bay, and with a width of 2.21 metres the vehicle cannot squeeze through even the larger 7-foot (2.13 m) width restrictors found across London.

For European buyers the launch powertrain is a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel producing 295 bhp and 465 lb ft of torque, paired with a mild-hybrid system that adds up to 24 bhp of electric assistance. A technically related, lower-output variant with 242 bhp will be offered in some markets. All-wheel drive is standard, along with adaptive air suspension and rear-wheel steering – tools aimed at making a vehicle this size slightly less intimidating to manoeuvre.

Inside, the emphasis is on space and technology. Audi is offering six- or seven-seat layouts, a segment-first panoramic sunroof, electric second-row seats, power-operated doors controllable via a smartphone app, and a triple-screen dashboard with a 14.5-inch central display and a dedicated 12.3-inch passenger screen. “For many of our customers, cars are becoming mobile living spaces,” said Audi boss Gernot Döllner, explicitly framing the Q9 as a lounge on wheels rather than a traditional people carrier.

No off-road credentials are claimed, although the Q9 gets seven drive modes, which presumably include at least one setting for light unpaved surfaces. The headline, however, is not the engine or the terrain ability – it is the sheer size that, in older European cities, turns a luxury asset into a practical problem.

The Q9 is the latest – and most extreme – example of an industry trend that has been building for a decade: luxury SUVs are being designed as spacious, tech-heavy sanctuaries first and transport tools second. Audi’s own chief frames the vehicle as a lifestyle space, and the feature list (fully adjustable second-row chairs, app-controlled doors, the largest-ever panoramic roof) supports that. The trade-off is that such a philosophy inevitably produces vehicles that clash with the dimensions of older urban infrastructure.

London’s width restrictors are a deliberate traffic-calming and access-control measure; the fact that the Q9 cannot pass the larger 2.13-metre opening is a concrete data point for a conversation cities are already having about whether public roads should accommodate vehicles of this size. While Audi does not position the Q9 as an off-roader, its length and width will also create challenges in multi-storey car parks, narrow country lanes and many continental European city centres.

A Diesel Flagship in an Electrifying World

The choice of a V6 turbodiesel as the primary engine for Europe is notable. While mild-hybrid assistance improves efficiency and response, the Q9 is not a plug-in hybrid and certainly not a battery-electric vehicle. For a range-topping model unveiled in 2026, that positions it as a statement of continued demand in markets where diesel still makes sense for high-mileage, heavy vehicles – but it also leaves the Q9 exposed to tightening low-emission zones and future urban access regulations.

What Urban Drivers Should Know Before Going Supersized

For potential buyers living in or regularly driving into dense city environments, the Q9’s dimensions raise immediate practical questions:

  • Check your regular route for width restrictors. At 2.21 m wide, the Q9 will not pass through 7-foot (2.13 m) openings. Many residential areas, school-run routes and central London cut-throughs rely on such restrictors.
  • Verify parking bay length and garage clearance. At 5.31 m long, the vehicle exceeds a standard UK off-street bay by roughly 0.5 m. Off-street parking or adaptations may be required.
  • Consider low-emission zone rules. The V6 diesel – even with mild-hybrid support – will face tightening access restrictions in an increasing number of European cities. Check local regulations if you plan to keep the car beyond 2030.
  • Factor in the diesel advantage only where it matters. If you cover long distances or tow regularly, the high torque may justify the engine choice; if most trips are short urban hops, running costs and access headaches could quickly outweigh the luxury.
