Lucid Reveals the 2027 Gravity GT-S in Monterey
Lucid brought a new performance flagship to the 2026 Monterey Car Week: the 2027 Gravity GT-S. The automaker says the three-row electric SUV will produce 1,070 horsepower, which would make it the most powerful three-row SUV available in the United States as of this writing.
The GT-S is positioned above the now-discontinued Tesla Model X Plaid, which made 1,020 horsepower, and the Rivian R1S Quad, which is rated at 1,025 horsepower. Lucid expects the GT-S to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds, an unusually quick claim for a vehicle designed to carry seven passengers and luggage.
Lucid has not yet published full technical specifications, pricing or an on-sale date. The company did confirm that the GT-S will come standard with a Dynamic Handling Package, and it is expected to use a variant of the Gravity's existing dual-motor system. The Gravity already includes rear-wheel steering and an adaptive three-chamber air suspension, which Lucid says should help the high-power model remain composed in daily driving.
The performance theme shows up in blue accents on the exterior, including the Gravity script, Bear logos, S badge and brake calipers. Inside, blue seat belts, stitching and piping stretch across the first and second rows, with matching blue details on the steering wheel and embossed Bear logos on the front headrests.
The Halo-Car Logic Behind the 1,070-HP Family SUV
Lucid's Halo Strategy for the Gravity Line
The GT-S follows the playbook Lucid used with the 1,234-horsepower Air Sapphire: use an extreme performance vehicle to pull attention toward a broader model line. For the Gravity, which is still building recognition in the luxury electric SUV market, a claimed most-powerful title gives Lucid a simple, headline-friendly differentiator without needing to reveal all of the model's everyday credentials yet.
The Competitive Set Has Shifted
With the Tesla Model X Plaid now discontinued, Rivian's R1S Quad is the clearest current benchmark among seven-seat performance EVs. The GT-S's claimed 1,070 horsepower gives it only a 45-horsepower edge over the R1S Quad on paper. That is a useful marketing claim, but it is unlikely to decide the segment by itself; buyers also weigh range, charging access, cabin quality, software and delivery reliability.
What the Numbers Do and Do Not Prove
A 3.1-second 0–60 time is a serious engineering statement for a large family SUV, but Lucid has not released torque, weight, range or pricing. The confirmed Dynamic Handling Package and the existing rear-wheel steering matter more for day-to-day usability than the peak power figure. Until independent testing and full specifications arrive, the GT-S remains a revealing statement of intent rather than a proven segment leader.
What Lucid, Rivian and Buyers Should Expect Next
The Monterey reveal answers the horsepower question but leaves the commercial questions open. The next useful signals will be the ones Lucid has not yet provided.
- Lucid: Follow the Monterey debut quickly with EPA range, pricing and delivery timing for the 2027 GT-S; the performance crown alone will not convert attention into Gravity orders if buyers cannot compare total cost and real-world range.
- Rivian: The R1S Quad remains close on paper at 1,025 horsepower and already has an established customer base. The most effective response may not be chasing another 45 horsepower; it can focus on range, charging speed and delivery experience.
- Seven-seat EV buyers: Treat the 1,070-horsepower and 3.1-second figures as claims to be verified in independent testing. Wait for Lucid to disclose price, range and the full Dynamic Handling Package calibration before comparing the GT-S with the Rivian R1S Quad and other three-row electric SUVs.
Risk & Opportunity Assessment
| Commercial Risk | Medium | Lucid has not disclosed price, range or an on-sale date; the GT-S is a halo variant that may not generate volume if those details disappoint. |
| Competitive Risk | Medium | The claimed 1,070 hp edges the Rivian R1S Quad by only 45 hp, and the Model X Plaid is discontinued; competitors can still compete on range, service and software. |
| Regulatory Risk | Low | The reveal names no new regulatory or subsidy issue tied to the GT-S; risk is limited to broader EV market policy not specific to this model. |
| Reputation Risk | Medium | The most-powerful claim depends on Lucid delivering specifications and test results; if independent testing falls short, the halo strategy could weaken. |
| Technology Disruption | Medium | The GT-S uses a variant of the existing dual-motor system plus a Dynamic Handling Package, making it a performance tuning exercise rather than a new platform breakthrough. |
| Commercial Opportunity | High | A high-horsepower flagship can draw attention and high-margin buyers to the Gravity line, similar to the halo role played by the Lucid Air Sapphire. |
