Porsche Adds a Stick Shift Back to the 911 Carrera S

Porsche used Monterey Car Week to confirm that the 2027 911 Carrera S will again be available with three pedals. The new MT Package is not simply a transmission option: it ties the manual gearbox to rear-wheel drive and a series of chassis and styling upgrades aimed at drivers who want a more mechanical 911.

Under the package, the Carrera S borrows the manual unit from the 911 Carrera T. Rear-axle steering, the Sport Chrono Package, revised exhaust tuning, and PASM Sport suspension are included, with the latter lowering the car by 0.4 inch. Porsche also adds a Sport Design front fascia and center-lock wheels, which it says save more than 17 pounds compared with standard Carrera S wheels.

The package carries real cost. Porsche prices the coupe at $169,450 and the convertible at $183,350, with first deliveries planned before the end of this year. That reflects both the hardware bundle and the fact that the manual is no longer offered as a standalone choice.

Why Porsche Is Packaging the Manual as a Premium Performance Option

Porsche's Countertrend Bet

At a time when many automakers are dropping manual transmissions, Porsche is treating a stick shift as a reason to buy a more expensive 911 rather than as a cost-saving base specification. The MT Package is deliberately enthusiast-focused: it forces rear-wheel drive, adds performance hardware, and offers options such as carbon ceramic brakes that are not available on the Carrera T. That creates a clear step between the Carrera T and a more heavily equipped Carrera S.

The Margin in the Package

By bundling the manual with rear-axle steering, Sport Chrono, PASM Sport suspension, and larger brakes, Porsche protects the car's transaction price. The company says the equipment effectively comes at a discount of roughly five percent versus a similarly optioned PDK automatic model, but the buyer cannot choose the manual alone. That structure makes the manual a premium identity for the S model rather than a low-cost alternative.

What the MT Package Means for Would-Be Buyers

  • If the manual is essential, expect to pay for the full MT Package, not a standalone gearbox. Porsche says the package raises the cost by more than $10,000 over the standard Carrera S.
  • Budget at least $169,450 for the coupe and $183,350 for the convertible before options such as Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes.
  • Order early if you want it this year: Porsche plans initial deliveries before the end of 2026.
  • Consider whether the included hardware matters to you. Rear-axle steering, PASM Sport, Sport Chrono, and center-lock wheels are standard in the package, so you are paying for track-oriented equipment whether or not you plan to use it.
