Every new car sold in the United States will be required to detect vehicles, pedestrians and other objects — and brake automatically — by September 2029, under NHTSA's FMVSS No. 127 rule. The agency has also rewritten its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) to give extra credit to advanced crash-avoidance systems, with particular attention to how they perform at night, when most fatal pedestrian incidents occur.
That deadline is pulling a wave of sensing technology out of the laboratories and into the showroom pipeline, as several suppliers demonstrated at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show. Teradar is developing a radar-style unit that operates on terahertz-frequency waves, which it says delivers angular resolution close to lidar's but at a fraction of the hardware cost. Microvision, working with Scantinel's silicon-photonics printed circuit boards, is pursuing frequency-modulated continuous-wave lidar that is far cheaper to build. And startup Atomathic showed AIDAR, a system that pairs inexpensive radar hardware with artificial intelligence to interpret signals that have bounced off multiple surfaces — allowing it, for example, to distinguish a human with a weak radar reflection standing next to a highly reflective delivery van.
The cabin is getting smarter too. Aptiv introduced a camera-based system that measures occupants' size, shape, posture and seat belt position, then classifies them and adjusts airbag and restraint deployment; the company claims it is the first such system accurate enough to eliminate all other occupant sensors in seats and seat tracks. TrinamiX is taking a different route, adding an infrared dot-matrix projector to the camera to measure heart and respiration rates, verify a face for secure authentication, identify seat belt material and track occupant position.
The same interior cameras are central to the separate question of impaired driving. NHTSA has yet to finalize its rulemaking on driver impairment detection — the draft was originally due in November 2024 — and sensor suppliers are positioning their technology to serve whatever detection scheme the agency eventually settles on.

For automakers, the rule creates two distinct deadlines: meeting FMVSS No. 127 by September 2029, and scoring well in the updated NCAP, which rewards systems that perform at night. That second incentive matters commercially, because NCAP star ratings still drive consumer choice and fleet purchasing decisions. Suppliers whose technology works in darkness have a structural advantage.
The unfinished DUI rulemaking is the wild card.
