Canberra's $520 Million Move to the AIM-260 JATM

Australia will become the first export customer for the U.S. AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, a next-generation beyond-visual-range air-to-air weapon whose specifications remain largely classified. Defence Minister Richard Marles announced the purchase on August 6 during Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Darwin, saying Canberra would spend roughly $520 million on an undisclosed number of missiles.

The Royal Australian Air Force intends to field the missile across its fighter fleet, beginning with the F/A-18 Super Hornet and then continuing to the F-35A Lightning II and EA-18G Growler. In time, the MQ-28 Ghost Bat drone may also carry the weapon; that unmanned aircraft demonstrated air-to-air potential by test-firing an AMRAAM in 2025.

Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor and has developed the missile with the U.S. Air Force and Navy. The AIM-260 is designed to restore the beyond-visual-range edge that the older AIM-120 AMRAAM provided for decades but that China's PL-15 and larger PL-17 have eroded. It is expected to incorporate GPS-aided guidance and keep an AMRAAM-like form so it can fit inside existing fighters' weapons bays. Because the program remains secret, the commonly cited estimate of at least 120 miles in range is educated speculation rather than confirmed specification.

China's PL-15 and PL-17 Set the Context

The PL-15 is already known as a long-range active-radar missile that China's J-20 can carry internally, while the PL-17 is larger and appears intended for high-value support aircraft such as tankers and AWACS.
