Coffee Polyphenols Tied to Lower Breast Cancer Death Risk in Small Study
Researchers tracking 95 women diagnosed with breast cancer over an average of 11.5 years found that those with higher total polyphenol consumption—particularly phenolic acids and lignans—had a significantly lower risk of death from the disease. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, also showed that a greater intake of phenolic acid was associated with fewer breast cancer recurrences.
Coffee emerged as the dominant contributor to the participants' polyphenol, phenolic acid and lignan intake. The findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that diet can influence cancer outcomes, but the study's small size and observational nature mean experts are interpreting the results cautiously.
"This study identifies an important signal, but it does not establish that increasing polyphenol intake will prevent recurrence or extend survival," said Tracy Crane, PhD, co-lead of the Cancer Control Program at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. She and other independent dietitians emphasized that the work is hypothesis-generating and needs replication in larger, more diverse populations.
While the correlation is promising, the researchers and commentators alike stress that no single food or nutrient is a magic bullet. Instead, they point to an overall dietary pattern rich in a variety of plant compounds as the more likely protective factor.
What the Polyphenol Link Means for Breast Cancer Survivors
The Study's Key Findings
After analyzing dietary data and health outcomes, the team observed that total polyphenol intake was correlated with longer overall survival when breast cancer mortality was the endpoint. Phenolic acids, one subgroup, were linked to both lower mortality and a reduced chance of recurrence. Lignans, another subgroup, were associated with lower breast cancer-specific death rates. Coffee accounted for the majority of these compounds in the women's diets.
Why Polyphenols Might Matter
Polyphenols are a vast family of naturally occurring plant chemicals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Monique Richard, a registered dietitian not involved in the study, explained that these compounds "appear to influence multiple biological pathways relevant to cancer survivorship, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, insulin sensitivity and immune signaling." Meridan Zerner, another dietitian, noted that lignans may also interact with gut bacteria in ways that could tone down estrogen-driven growth in breast tissue, though she stressed that far more research is needed to confirm any hormonal mechanism.
Expert Caution: Not a Coffee Prescription
All outside experts interviewed urged restraint. Crane warned against rushing to drink large amounts of coffee or consuming alcohol as a polyphenol source, and said the next steps must include replication in much larger cohorts that account for breast cancer subtype, stage, modern treatments, physical activity and socioeconomic factors. "Ultimately, I would like to see randomized, food-based interventions that test whether increasing a diverse range of polyphenol-rich whole foods changes relevant metabolic, inflammatory and tumor-related pathways," she added, cautioning that concentrated supplements are not the logical next step.
How to Boost Polyphenol Intake Through Diet
Practical Ways to Increase Dietary Polyphenols
While the science develops, the experts' consensus is that whole foods—not supplements—offer the safest benefit. They suggest:
- Eat the rainbow: Darker-coloured fruits and vegetables tend to have higher polyphenol counts. Think blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, red grapes, plums, red cabbage and pomegranates.
- Snack strategically: A small handful of walnuts or pistachios paired with a piece of dark chocolate provides lignans and other polyphenols.
- Choose unsweetened beverages: Green tea, black tea and coffee (if tolerated) are leading polyphenol sources, but skip the sugar to avoid insulin spikes.
- Enhance with olive oil and spices: Extra virgin olive oil on dressings or roasted vegetables and spices such as cumin, cloves, ginger and cinnamon add polyphenols without extra calories.
"Every meal is an opportunity to include another source of polyphenols," Richard said. "Our entire dietary pattern, and lifestyle choices, can support long-term health and resilience."
