Safety Campaign Covers Power Banks, Mugs, and SUVs

Colombia's Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (SIC) has launched a new safety awareness campaign, alerting consumers to potential fire and burn hazards in several popular products. Among the flagged items are the Xiaomi 33W Power Bank 20,000 mAh with integrated cable (model PB2030MI), the Belkin BoostCharge USB-C 20,000 mAh external battery, two Stanley travel mug models—Switchback and Trigger Action—and certain Toyota Tundra and Land Cruiser 300 vehicles.

The regulator warns that the Xiaomi power bank can overheat its battery, posing a fire risk. The Belkin charger's lithium-ion cell component may also overheat and cause burns. The Stanley mugs have a design issue where the lid threads can contract when exposed to heat and torque, potentially allowing the lid to detach during use and leading to scalding. Toyota SUVs manufactured between August and September 2024 are affected by a battery overheating issue that could result in a fire.

The SIC is urging consumers to immediately verify whether their devices or vehicles fall within the affected batches and to take appropriate safety measures.

What Makes These Products a Risk

Xiaomi 33W Power Bank

The reported defect lies in the battery's thermal management. A manufacturing flaw can cause the unit to overheat in normal use, raising the likelihood of a fire. Xiaomi has set up a dedicated recall webpage where owners can check their product's serial number.

Belkin BoostCharge 20,000mAh

Belkin's portable charger shares a similar risk: a faulty lithium-ion cell may overheat during charging or discharging. The SIC noted that the issue can occur "in some circumstances," leaving consumers potentially exposed to burn injuries.

Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action Mugs

Unlike the electronic products, the Stanley mugs present a mechanical hazard. The lid's threads can shrink under heat and torque, causing the lid to pop off while drinking. This could lead to serious burns if the contents are hot.

Toyota Tundra and Land Cruiser 300

The SIC alert extends to a specific production window for the Tundra and Land Cruiser 300 (August–September 2024). A battery defect in these SUVs can lead to overheating and fire, though the regulator did not detail the exact component or remedy in its announcement.
