Consumer Reports tested 23 protein supplements—including powders and shakes—and found that more than two-thirds contained lead levels exceeding the organization’s safety threshold of 0.5 micrograms per day. While the FDA’s interim reference level for women of reproductive age is 12.5 micrograms per day, the findings add to a growing body of research showing detectable heavy metals in these products.

The contamination is not limited to lead. Earlier studies have also found cadmium, arsenic, and mercury in protein powders, with plant-based varieties typically showing higher concentrations than dairy-based ones.
