Colombia’s Digital News Audience Soars to 33 Million, Driven by Mobile

Colombians consumed more digital news than ever in the first half of 2026, with the audience reaching 33.07 million unique users in June, up from 26.62 million at the start of the year. The surge was fueled by a packed news agenda that included the World Cup, the second round of presidential elections, a falling US dollar, and twin earthquakes in Venezuela.

Mobile devices solidified their role as the dominant channel. Of the 33.07 million total internet users accessing news in June, 29.5 million did so via smartphones, compared to 16.1 million who used computers. This pattern held steady throughout the first half of the year, with mobile consistently attracting over 29 million unique users each month—a clear sign that smartphones have become the default platform for staying informed.

Social media platforms also played a central role, with 26.2 million users turning to networks like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok for news. The data, sourced from a media planning and measurement tool, also showed that some outlets gained ground: one media brand climbed from 22nd place in January to 19th by June, growing its audience from 2.69 million to 2.88 million unique users.

Why Mobile and Social Media Now Define Colombian News Habits

The Unstoppable Rise of the Smartphone

The numbers leave little doubt that mobile is now the primary news gateway for Colombians. With 29.5 million mobile unique users in June—versus just 16.1 million on desktop—the gap has widened far beyond a temporary pandemic shift. Even when major events like elections or football tournaments spike traffic, the mobile share remains stable, suggesting that newsrooms must now design content and distribution strategies with the small screen first.

Social Media as the News Front Page

The fact that 26.2 million users, or nearly 80% of the digital news audience, consumed news through social platforms signals that algorithms and feeds are replacing traditional homepages. This changes how stories are discovered and shared, putting pressure on publishers to maintain a strong presence on social apps or risk losing visibility in a 33-million-strong market.

What This Shift Means for News Publishers

  • For Colombian news publishers: With 89% of the digital news audience using smartphones and 79% relying on social media, failing to deliver mobile-optimized, shareable content means missing the vast majority of potential readers. Investment in mobile-first design and social media distribution should be immediate priorities.
