The Rhine has hit its lowest level at Kaub — the river's shallowest navigation point — since records began in 1880. The current clearance reading of 14 centimetres, a gauge reference rather than a true depth, corresponds to a navigable channel depth of about 1.27 metres, and the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration forecasts it could fall to 9 centimetres by Friday. With another heat wave moving across France, Germany and Poland, forecasters say only weeks of sustained rain would lift the river, making a recovery unlikely before October.

The practical effect is that barge transport is being severely curtailed even though the river never formally closes. Shipping broker Riverlake says the route has effectively become impassable at Kaub: barges on the Upper Rhine cannot return to the Antwerp-Rotterdam-Amsterdam hub, and barges from that hub cannot proceed upstream. That blocks the natural corridor for diesel, heating oil, coal, grains and cocoa through Europe's industrial core.

Companies are already switching modes. Lanxess said some loading and unloading points are no longer accessible, so it is moving shipments to rail and road where possible; Evonik and BASF reported similar fallbacks, with BASF also deploying more vessels designed for low-water conditions. Utility EnBW expects the disruption to cut its earnings by a low double-digit-million-euro amount, while Schleswig-Holstein has temporarily lifted its Sunday trucking ban to shift more freight onto roads. Covestro puts the substitution cost into perspective: replacing one 1,500-tonne barge takes about 60 trucks.

The conditions are part of a broader drought. Europe is bracing for its fifth heat wave of the summer, and the Danube has also struggled with record lows, briefly limiting electricity production at Hungary's Paks nuclear plant. Those parallels show the Rhine disruption is not an isolated logistics incident but part of a regional water-stress shock affecting energy, agriculture and freight across Europe.

Companies without barge alternatives are absorbing higher freight costs and less reliable delivery schedules.

Coal and refined products are among the most vulnerable commodities. EnBW depends on coal delivered from Rotterdam, and Germany's Miro refinery exports gasoline by barge. EnBW's warning of a low double-digit-million-euro earnings impact shows that low water is not merely a logistics nuisance — it directly changes energy producers' profitability and could tighten fuel availability in inland markets.

Kaub Is a Threshold Indicator, Not Just a Local Problem

The Kaub gauge is the market's reference point because it marks the shallowest point on the main route. A clearance of 14 centimetres does not mean the river is 14 centimetres deep; it means the reference point has fallen that low, with a fairway depth of about 1.27 metres. The German Inland Waterway Transport Cooperative says vessels can still pass at around 10 centimetres, but passage depends on propeller configuration and load weight — so operational reality can differ sharply by barge type.

Weather and hydrology make the outlook poor: reduced Alpine snow and glacier runoff, sparse rainfall and repeated heat waves have depleted the basin. Commerzbank economist Ralph Solveen estimates that if critical levels persist until mid-September, the disruption would shave about 0.35 percentage point from German GDP this quarter. That converts a river problem into a macro risk for one of Europe's largest economies.

For shippers, chemical producers and utilities tied to the Rhine, the practical implications are specific:

  • Assume no barge round-trips through Kaub until the gauge recovers. Riverlake's assessment means Upper Rhine barges cannot return to the Antwerp-Rotterdam-Amsterdam hub and downstream barges cannot proceed; plan capacity around unimodal rail and road alternatives.
  • Cost the truck substitution explicitly. Covestro's figure of roughly 60 trucks to replace one 1,500-tonne barge is a useful benchmark for freight budgets and emissions calculations when barge access is lost.
  • Reassess exposure to coal, heating oil, diesel, grains and cocoa. The blocked commodities are the same inputs EnBW, Miro and food processors rely on; buyers should expect longer lead times and higher inland freight rates while Kaub stays below normal.
