The Rediscovery That Unlocked Two Decades of Silence

A 240-million-year-old reptile that lived in the aftermath of the planet’s worst mass extinction has finally been formally identified – thanks to the recovery of a fossil fragment that had been lost for more than 20 years. The species, named Silescelida acristata, was discovered in the interior of Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, inside the UNESCO Quarta Colônia Geopark.

The fossil, which preserves key limb bones, had been incomplete for two decades after part of the specimen – containing critical provenance information – went missing from a scientific collection. It was only in 2022, during a routine visit to the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, that researchers located the missing piece, allowing them to confirm the creature’s identity as a new species.

The animal’s very name tells the story: Silescelida combines words for “silence” and “leg,” a nod to the long period the fossil lay forgotten, while acristata means “without a crest,” referring to the unusual absence of a bony ridge on its femur. This small, slender reptile – about the size of a small alligator – was not a dinosaur or a crocodile, but a close relative of the archosauriforms that eventually gave rise to both groups.

Silescelida acristata helps paleontologists piece together a crucial chapter in vertebrate evolution. The species lived during the Middle Triassic, a time when terrestrial ecosystems were still recovering from the Permian-Triassic extinction 252 million years ago. Archosauriforms, the broad lineage that includes the ancestors of dinosaurs and crocodiles, were rapidly diversifying into different body shapes and lifestyles. Silescelida exhibits a semi-erect leg posture, a structural shift that made locomotion more efficient and set the stage for the later success of true archosaurs.

Expanding the Geographic Spread of Rare Relatives

Phylogenetic analyses suggest the new species may be related to the Euparkeriidae, a rare and poorly understood group of archosauriforms previously known only from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Its presence in South America significantly widens the known geographic range of these animals, reinforcing the continent’s role as a key theater for the early diversification of the reptiles that would one day dominate the land.

Why a Partial Fossil Still Carries Weight

Though often overlooked, fragmentary remains can deliver outsize scientific insights. In this case, limb bones alone were enough to identify a new species, infer its mode of walking, position it on the evolutionary tree, and extend the range of a rare Triassic group.
