The Shift Away from Richter’s 1935 Invention

The Richter scale hasn't disappeared, but it is now rarely used by seismologists. The reason: it wasn't built to handle the largest quakes. Charles Richter developed the scale in 1935 to compare relatively small tremors in California, using the amplitude of seismic waves recorded by a specific type of seismograph. For decades, the public learned earthquake magnitudes as Richter numbers, but behind the scenes, experts had long recognized its limitations.

The core problem is that Richter's method “saturates” when a quake gets very intense. Beyond a certain point, the recorded wave amplitude no longer increases in proportion to the actual energy released. As a result, two massive earthquakes can be assigned similar Richter magnitudes even though one releases far more energy than the other. This masks the true scale of destruction and can distort hazard assessments.

Why Sismologists Now Prefer Moment Magnitude

The rise of moment magnitude (Mw)

Today, the preferred metric is the moment magnitude scale (Mw), which directly estimates the physical work done by the earthquake. Rather than relying solely on waveform amplitude, it factors in three measurable quantities: the area of the fault that ruptured, how much the two sides of the fault slipped past each other, and the rigidity of the rocks involved. This approach gives a consistent measure across a far wider range of quake sizes—from tiny tremors to the colossal megathrust events that can exceed magnitude 9.0.

The transition to moment magnitude is not just an academic preference. Public communication still often uses “Richter” out of habit, but official agencies like the U.S. Geological Survey now report moment magnitude. For engineers, insurers, and emergency planners, the distinction matters: knowing whether a quake released 10 times or 100 times more energy than another informs building codes, risk models, and response protocols. Richter’s original scale served its purpose in a pre-digital era, but the science of earthquakes has moved on.
