Iceland boasts the world’s highest volume of renewable freshwater per person, according to 2022 data from Our World in Data. With 445,022 cubic meters for every inhabitant, the Nordic island nation holds a commanding lead over second-placed Guyana (293,317 m³) and third-placed Suriname (158,867 m³). The extreme abundance is driven by Iceland’s glaciers, heavy rainfall and a population of fewer than 400,000 people.
Guyana and Suriname, both small South American countries, similarly benefit from constant tropical downpours, dense river networks and sparse populations. Bhutan (99,883 m³) secures the highest per-capita freshwater in Asia, ranking fourth globally, while African leaders include Gabon, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The picture changes sharply when population size enters the equation. Canada holds some of the largest absolute freshwater reserves on Earth but lands in sixth place on a per-capita basis, and much of its water lies far from major population and agricultural centres. The United States, despite its massive total reserves, slumps to 54th globally because of its large population.
Georgia, with 15,657 m³ per person, ranks 39th worldwide – a figure that puts it far ahead of neighbours Armenia (2,310 m³) and Azerbaijan (800 m³). That regional advantage gives Georgia strong strategic potential in hydroelectric power, irrigation and other water-dependent sectors.

A high per-capita number does not guarantee easy access. Canada’s vast northern water bodies are distant from its population belt and agricultural zones, making extraction and distribution expensive. Similar access gaps exist in Russia and Brazil, where abundant resources are geographically mismatched with demand centres. The ranking therefore doubles as a reminder that infrastructure and location define practical water availability as much as the raw resource does.

For Georgia, a per-capita freshwater figure that dwarfs its immediate neighbours opens the door to expanded hydroelectric generation, improved irrigation and potentially water-intensive industries. However, turning that natural endowment into economic gain still requires investment in storage, treatment and distribution networks, especially in rural and mountainous areas where the resource is plentiful but hard to reach.
