From Industrial Fire to Cleanup Milestone

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, working with West Virginia state and local partners, has completed a critical phase of the cleanup at the Fairmont Brine Site. The work, triggered by a May 2023 industrial fire that released hazardous materials, focused on eliminating immediate threats to residents and the environment in Fairmont.

Over the past three years, the Unified Command — including the EPA, state health and environmental agencies, and Marion County emergency services — removed more than 1,000 tons of radioactive solids, processed 46,200 gallons of contaminated fluids, and dismantled unstable infrastructure. The site was secured with perimeter fencing and containment measures shortly after the fire.

The initial removal action, funded with $3.1 million in federal money authorized in August 2024, wrapped up in July 2026 with the final transport and off-site disposal of technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM). Throughout the operation, continuous air monitoring and 24/7 surveillance maintained a zero-incident safety record.

Community engagement was a cornerstone of the effort: a public hotline, a town hall meeting on radiation concerns, monthly community calls, and regular fact sheets kept residents informed. With immediate hazards neutralized, the EPA will now transition to monitoring and planning for any further actions that may be necessary.

The agency’s statement that it will “evaluate site conditions and determine what additional actions may be appropriate” signals that the site could be added to the National Priorities List or require further remediation down the line — a process that will hinge on ongoing testing and community input.

The sustained communication effort in Fairmont — from the initial hotline to regular monthly calls — is notable. Direct engagement with worried residents, especially on radiation fears, likely prevented public panic and built trust in the cleanup process.
