EPA's Lake Guardian Sets Out on a Month-Long Great Lakes Survey

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has sent its largest research vessel, the Lake Guardian, back onto the water for a month-long summer survey of water quality and food-web conditions across all five Great Lakes. The ship began the expedition in early August, with scientists measuring conditions at a time of year when warm surface water sits above colder bottom water.

That layering shapes nutrient and oxygen levels, algal growth, the distribution of organisms and fish habitat, according to the EPA. The data gathered during the cruise is used to protect drinking water and recreational sites, assess stresses on the ecosystem and support fishery management decisions.

EPA scientists will be joined by researchers from institutions such as Cornell University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota-Duluth, the University of Chicago, Cleveland State University, Buffalo State University and Michigan Technological University, among others. The summer leg follows a spring survey in April and dedicated Lake Michigan and Lake Erie monitoring work carried out between May and September. In July, 15 educators from across the Great Lakes basin also took part in a Lake Superior sampling exercise through the EPA-NOAA Sea Grant partnership.

The agency says it has conducted biannual sampling since 1983, giving the program the longest-running and most extensive dataset on water quality and aquatic life in the Great Lakes. The Lake Guardian is funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, launched in 2010 to protect and restore the world's largest surface freshwater ecosystem.

Summer is the season when the Great Lakes are most vulnerable to oxygen depletion and algal blooms, because warmer surface water can cut off mixing with colder, deeper water. The EPA's measurements of oxygen, temperature, nutrients and organisms during this window are therefore more than routine data collection: they are the basis for judging whether the lakes are meeting water quality goals and for managing commercially and recreationally important fisheries.

Why the Long Dataset Matters

Because the EPA has run the same biannual surveys since 1983, each summer cruise extends a directly comparable record. That continuity gives regulators and researchers a way to separate long-term change from year-to-year variation, something shorter monitoring programs cannot do. The involvement of multiple universities also spreads analytical capacity across the region, while the educator training element is designed to carry Great Lakes literacy into classrooms.

The agency's announcement describes what will be sampled and why, but it does not yet report findings. No conclusions about the current health of the lakes should be drawn from the announcement itself.
