Safe Return Concludes 241-Day Orbital Mission

NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev landed safely in Kazakhstan on Sunday, July 26, wrapping up an extended research mission on the International Space Station. Their Soyuz MS-28 capsule touched down at 5:27 a.m. CDT under parachute, southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan, after undocking from the orbital outpost just over three hours earlier.

The trio spent 241 days in space, completing 3,856 orbits of Earth and covering more than 102 million miles. The mission began with a launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on November 27, 2025. For Williams and Mikaev, the flight was their first journey into space; Kud-Sverchkov was on his second long-duration stay.

During the mission, Williams helped advance investigations into new cancer treatments and refined in-space manufacturing techniques for materials used in high-performance electronics. He also performed two spacewalks to prepare the station for future maintenance and upgrades. Following standard post-landing medical checks near the touchdown site, the crew was flown to the recovery base in Karaganda, where Williams boarded a NASA aircraft for the journey back to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The routine crew rotation highlights the continued operational partnership between NASA and Roscosmos, which has kept the space station continuously staffed for more than 25 years. The smooth landing of a mixed Russian-U.S. crew underscores that the technical and logistical machinery of cooperation still functions as designed.

Science Payloads and Spacewalks Advance Research

Williams’ research tasks, though not detailed at the level of published results, align with key ISS science priorities: testing cancer therapies in microgravity and refining manufacturing processes for advanced computing materials. Both areas benefit from the absence of gravity, which alters fluid behavior and crystal growth in ways impossible to replicate on Earth. His two spacewalks also support the station’s longevity as a research hub, part of NASA’s preparation for longer human missions to the Moon under the Artemis program and eventually to Mars.
