Mike Fincke's 30-Year NASA Career, From Soyuz to Crew Dragon
NASA veteran Mike Fincke is leaving the agency on Wednesday, closing a 30-year career that made him one of the most experienced astronauts in U.S. history. He flew four missions, logged 549 days in space and completed nine spacewalks totaling 48 hours and 37 minutes. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman described him as a pilot, engineer, astronaut and mentor whose work shaped long-duration station missions and the Artemis generation.
Fincke joined NASA's 16th astronaut class in 1996 and first reached orbit in 2004 aboard Soyuz TMA-4 as a flight engineer and science officer for Expedition 9, where he performed four spacewalks. He returned in 2008 as commander of Expedition 18, helping prepare the space station for six-person crews and completing two more spacewalks. In 2011 he flew on STS-134, the final flight of space shuttle Endeavour, operating the robotic arm and helping install the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.
His most recent flight was SpaceX Crew-11, which launched in August 2025 and returned in January. Fincke served as flight engineer for Expedition 73 and commander of Expedition 74. He ranks fourth among NASA astronauts in cumulative time in space.
Beyond flight, NASA credits him with foundational work on the Commercial Crew Program and with testing and integrating early space station modules. He led the Astronaut Office's Commercial Crew Branch, spent five years supporting Boeing's Crew Flight Test training, and served on the ground as a capcom and procedures lead. A retired U.S. Air Force colonel, Fincke logged more than 2,000 flight hours in more than 30 aircraft types.
