An international climbing expedition led by Nirmal Purja, the Nepalese mountaineer who rose to global fame for summiting all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre mountains in a record-breaking six months, has been hit by an avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain at 8,047 metres. The incident occurred on Thursday in the Karakoram range, located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Pakistani mountaineering authorities confirmed that no communication has been received from the 10-member team since the avalanche struck. The group included climbers from the United States, China, Oman and five other Nepalese nationals, besides Purja. Karrar Haidri, vice president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, said efforts were being coordinated with local authorities to mount a rescue.
Weather permitting, a helicopter rescue mission was planned for Friday morning Pakistani time. The Alpine Club has stated it is in constant contact with authorities to mobilise all available resources and expressed solidarity with the families and the broader mountaineering community.
Purja, a former British Royal Marine, first gained international recognition in 2019 with his ‘Project Possible’ feat, climbing all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks in just over six months. His mountaineering journey began in 2012 after a trek to Everest Base Camp inspired him to pursue high-altitude climbing.
