A looming heat stress for Singapore's reefs

Singapore’s coral reefs may suffer another major bleaching episode in 2027 if a predicted strong El Niño materialises, according to the National Parks Board (NParks) and marine scientists. El Niño conditions are already present and forecast to strengthen between August and September 2026, pushing sea surface temperatures higher. The greatest thermal stress on corals typically occurs as an El Niño weakens, meaning March to May 2027 is the period of highest risk.

During bleaching, stressed corals expel the microscopic algae that give them colour and nutrients, turning them white and leaving them vulnerable to disease and death. Singapore experienced mass bleaching during global events in 1998, 2010, 2016 and 2024, all of which followed El Niño-driven warming.

Dr Huang Danwei, deputy head of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at NUS, said there is a “good chance” of severe bleaching if the El Niño extends into mid-2027. NParks is actively monitoring the situation and has noted that impacts could intensify next year if the forecast holds.

Karenne Tun, group director of NParks’ National Biodiversity Centre, explained that severe bleaching during strong El Niños can cause extensive coral death, reduce structural complexity and lead to long-term declines in reef fish diversity. While recent bleaching events have caused relatively low immediate mortality – around 5 per cent in 2024 – the reefs are slowly “flattening.”

Studies show that a combination of heat stress, chronic turbidity, sedimentation and coastal development has already shifted Singapore’s reefs from branching, structurally complex corals to more stress-tolerant, massive and dome-shaped forms. This simplification can reduce habitat availability, biodiversity, coastal protection and the reef’s ability to grow upwards.

Why recovery time is shrinking

The frequency of bleaching events is increasing, giving reefs less time to recover between stress episodes. Huang noted that when corals fail to recover, the fish, crustaceans and other marine life that depend on them also decline. Declines in reef fish, which are critical for food security and livelihoods in South-east Asia, could hit vulnerable coastal communities hardest.

The latest UN World Ocean Assessment, released in June 2026, confirms that global coral cover continues to shrink under the pressure of rising temperatures, pollution, sedimentation and over-extraction. The report also warns that ocean acidification is adding a slower but persistent strain, weakening the structures that corals build.

Restoration is a last resort

NParks launched its 100k Corals Initiative in December 2024, aiming to plant 100,000 corals over the next decade – Singapore’s most ambitious restoration effort yet. However, Dr Jani Tanzil of the St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory cautioned that reef restoration is expensive, difficult to scale and should be seen as a last resort. In Singapore, where only about 10 square kilometres of reefs remain, there may be no choice but to pursue it aggressively.

Huang emphasised that restoration alone cannot outpace climate change. Even with coral gardening, the logistical effort is immense. “Ultimately, climate change needs to be halted and reversed for coral reefs to have a reasonable chance,” he said.

  • Reduce your carbon footprint by choosing energy-efficient appliances and transport, as greenhouse gas emissions are the root cause of warming seas.
  • Support local coastal conservation projects and organisations working on reef protection.
  • Choose sustainable seafood to reduce pressure on reef-associated fish populations.
  • Advocate for stronger environmental policies, as systemic change is needed to complement local restoration.
