Jana Nayagan Crosses ₹200 Crore in Opening Weekend

Thalapathy Vijay’s final Tamil film Jana Nayagan has crossed the ₹200 crore worldwide mark within just four days of its release, underlining the star’s immense box office pull even as he bows out of cinema. After a stellar opening weekend, the action entertainer passed its first major test on Monday, collecting an estimated ₹32 crore net in India, according to trade data from Sacnilk.

The film’s India net collection now stands at ₹124.75 crore, with a domestic gross of ₹145.98 crore. Overseas, it added around ₹10 crore on its fourth day, taking its international gross to ₹71.50 crore. Combined, the worldwide gross figure reached an estimated ₹217.48 crore, comfortably surpassing the ₹200 crore milestone well inside the opening weekend.

Jana Nayagan has become only the second Tamil film of 2026 to cross ₹100 crore net in India, behind Suriya’s Karuppu, which holds the year’s highest domestic collection at ₹198 crore. Vijay’s film has already overtaken the lifetime India runs of several notable releases this year, including Love Insurance Kompany, Dragon, and Sikandar.

The Tamil version remains the dominant contributor, earning ₹27.30 crore net on Monday alone. The Hindi and Telugu dubbed versions added smaller but meaningful amounts, driven by decent occupancy rates in their respective circuits. In Tamil Nadu, the film grossed ₹22.50 crore on its fourth day, reaffirming the state as its single largest market.

What Drove Jana Nayagan’s Strong Box Office Performance

The Vijay factor and the emotional goodbye

Vijay’s announcement that Jana Nayagan would be his last film before entering full-time politics has galvanised his fanbase. The combination of a star in his prime delivering a mass entertainer, and the emotional weight of a farewell, has turned the release into an event. That sentiment likely fuelled not just an opening weekend boom but also sustained Monday numbers, which typically see a sharp drop for action films. The Monday collection holding at around 50% of Sunday’s figure is a sign that repeat viewings and word-of-mouth are driving attendance beyond the initial fan frenzy.

How the film is travelling across languages

The Tamil original’s near-70% occupancy on Monday indicates deep penetration in home markets, while the Hindi version’s 21% and Telugu’s 24% occupancy suggest a more limited but not negligible reach in the northern and Telugu-speaking belts. The Hindi-dubbed market has been a growth avenue for Tamil biggies in recent years, and Jana Nayagan’s modest performance there likely reflects the absence of a pan-India promotion push. Still, the film’s cumulative overseas gross of ₹71.50 crore — roughly a third of the total — underscores the enduring international demand for Tamil star vehicles, especially in the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and select Western circuits.

The road ahead: can it top Karuppu?

The next milestone to watch is whether Jana Nayagan can surpass Karuppu’s ₹198 crore India net. Monday’s hold and the lack of major competing releases in the coming week give it a realistic shot, though the usual weekday drops and eventual digital premiere (likely on a streaming platform within four to six weeks) will set the upper ceiling. If the film maintains even a 40–50% decline through the working days and sees a second weekend bump, it could enter the ₹200 crore domestic net club — a rare achievement for a Tamil title and a fitting coda to Vijay’s screen career.
