Night Drone Strike Hits Rostov-on-Don, Killing Two

An overnight drone attack on the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don left a married couple dead and five other people injured, including a teenager, local officials said. Two of the wounded were reported to be in serious condition and were hospitalized, while one person received medical assistance at the scene.

The strikes caused destruction in the Zheleznodorozhny, Proletarsky, and Leninsky districts of the city. Fires broke out at several sites where drones fell, including at a private industrial enterprise, warehouses, and several private homes. Cars parked nearby also caught fire. Most fires were extinguished by emergency crews, though one blaze covering 400 square meters remained active at the time of reporting.

Windows were shattered in a number of private houses and on the upper floors of a multi-story apartment building, as well as at a social welfare facility. Governor Yury Slyusar confirmed the casualties and damage, and noted that emergency services were still working to fully contain the situation.

Rostov-on-Don and the surrounding region have been repeatedly targeted by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Previous attacks have resulted in similar incidents: debris from intercepted drones striking residential buildings, causing fires and injuries. In past episodes, the number of damaged homes ranged from 10 to 20, and fires were reported at industrial sites and even in the port, where a vessel was once damaged. Civilian casualties, including children, have occurred before.

The local authorities have established a pattern of response for such events. Following earlier strikes, the city has declared a state of emergency in affected zones, set up temporary accommodation for evacuees, and formed commissions to assess damage and provide material assistance to victims. This institutionalized emergency framework is now activated almost routinely, reflecting the persistent security challenge faced by the region.
