Why Your Refund Is Stuck This Year
As the 31 July deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2026-27 approaches, many early filers are already watching for their refunds. An income tax refund is triggered when the tax already paid—through TDS, advance tax, or self-assessment—exceeds the taxpayer’s actual liability. Yet even with a correctly filed return, refunds can stall for weeks or months.
The Income Tax Department has flagged five frequent reasons behind such delays: incorrect or unvalidated bank account details (wrong account number, invalid IFSC code, closed account); failure to e-verify the return after filing; mismatches in the PAN linked to the tax records; discrepancies between the ITR and automated statements like Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement (AIS); and simple filing errors in the return itself. Each of these can pause the refund process until corrected.
How Tax Department Verification Can Cause Delays
Bank Validation and PAN: Where Small Errors Stop Your Refund
The refund system only credits money to a bank account that has been pre-validated and linked to the taxpayer’s PAN. If the account number or IFSC code is wrong, or the account has been closed, the transaction fails silently. Even a minor mismatch in the PAN—such as a name not matching the IT database—can freeze the refund because the system cannot establish a clear link between the return and the bank account.
Form 26AS and AIS: The Matching That Must Add Up
Before issuing a refund, the Central Processing Centre compares the ITR with Form 26AS (which shows TDS and tax payments credited to your PAN) and the broader AIS (which includes high-value financial transactions). If the tax claimed as paid does not match the department’s records—perhaps because an employer did not deposit TDS on time, or a deduction was misreported—the refund is put on hold pending a mismatch resolution.
E-Verification: An Often-Overlooked Requirement
Even after submitting the ITR, the return must be verified within 30 days, either electronically through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by sending a signed physical ITR-V to Bengaluru. An unverified return is treated as invalid, and no refund can be processed until verification is complete.
Your Refund Checklist for Faster Processing
- Validate your bank account: On the e-filing portal, check that the account you want the refund credited to is validated and marked as ‘pre-validated’. Re-validate if you recently changed banks or accounts.
- Complete e-verification immediately: After filing, use the Aadhaar OTP or net banking route. If you opted for physical verification, track the ITR-V dispatch and confirmation.
- Match PAN details: Confirm that your name, date of birth, and PAN on the ITR exactly match the PAN card and the Income Tax Department’s records. Any mismatch can block the refund.
- Reconcile tax credits: Download Form 26AS and the AIS from the e-filing portal. Verify every TDS entry and advance tax payment matches what you declared. If not, file a revised return or contact the deductor.
- Use the refund status tracker: The ‘Refund/Demand Status’ option under ‘My Account’ on the e-filing portal shows whether the refund has been processed, and if not, frequently prompts the specific reason for the hold-up.
