In January 2026, construction officially began on what is set to become Africa’s largest airport. Bishoftu International Airport, located 40 kilometres south of Addis Ababa, is designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and will ultimately feature four runways and capacity for 100 million passengers a year. The first phase, with two runways and a terminal spanning 660,000 square metres, aims to serve 60 million travellers annually by 2030, when it is slated to open.
