PubMatic and Optable Automate First-Party Data Deals With AI Agents
PubMatic and Optable have combined their AI agent technology into a workflow that lets publishers turn first-party data into programmatic deals without the manual ad operations work those deals usually require. The integration runs on AgenticOS, PubMatic's framework for connecting buy-side and sell-side AI agents: Optable's sell-side agent packages publisher data into audiences based on a campaign brief, and PubMatic's buyer agent ingests the resulting prompts.
The step marks a shift for PubMatic, which previously positioned itself as a pure supply-side platform, and a change of scenery for agentic ad tech. Until recently, AI agents were used mostly to automate direct-sold campaigns — PubMatic says it has completed more than 1,000 such deals. The new use case is curated programmatic private marketplace (PMP) deals, said Abbie Reichner, PubMatic's VP of customer success. So far, roughly 30 agentic programmatic campaigns have run through PubMatic's platform, and about half were powered by the Optable integration.
Publishers have long been told their first-party data is a valuable, underused asset, but curating it into audiences was a manual job for ad ops and sales teams, said Charlie Morris, VP of partnerships and data strategy at publisher ad network Mediavine. Mediavine, which runs its network of more than 18,000 publishers on Optable as its data management platform, is testing the new workflow, as is gaming publisher Livewire.
What the Agentic Shift Means for Publishers, SSPs and Agency Budgets
The integration is less a finished product than a proof of concept for a market that barely exists yet. The numbers on PubMatic's platform tell that story: more than 1,000 agentic direct-sold campaigns completed, but only about 30 agentic programmatic campaigns so far, roughly half of them through Optable. Interpretation: the direct-sold work built the technology, and these programmatic pilots are where the revenue model is being tested. Verified fact — those campaign counts come from PubMatic's own reporting via Reichner; financial results were not disclosed.
Why Mediavine and Livewire Are Testing First
Both publishers sit on data assets that are hard to package manually. Mediavine's network of more than 18,000 publishers gives Optable a large pool of first-party data to draw on; Livewire's Gamer ID is a proprietary identifier that has limited value unless buyers can easily discover and activate it. Morris says agentic curation lets publishers assemble audiences tailored to specific campaigns — including audiences publishers may not even know are in demand — and get discovered in real time without deploying a large sales force. Khabra says Livewire sees agentic pipelines as a route into more omnichannel programmatic campaigns. In other words, the publishers that already own data infrastructure stand to benefit most while the technology is still cheap to test.
PubMatic's Buyer Agent as an SSP Differentiation Play
Morris says Mediavine has been testing several sell-side agents and audience curation solutions from different SSPs, but PubMatic is among the first to offer a buy-side tool that pulls in the audiences those agents create. “PubMatic has really leaned into the buyer agent, which is filling a pretty big need right now, because there's a lot of people on the seller agent side,” he said. That matters in a commoditized SSP market where demand has historically clustered around the largest platforms. Interpretation: the buyer agent lets PubMatic position itself as the connective tissue between publisher data and AI-driven buyer demand, rather than just a pipe that moves inventory.
Where the Early Ad Dollars Will Come From
Morris expects agencies to redirect direct-buy budgets toward agentic activation before they touch programmatic budgets, partly because agencies need visible AI initiatives to present to brands. Khabra argues publishers should integrate with agentic partners to cover every preferred supply path, so gaming inventory shows up in AI-brokered omnichannel campaigns. The honest caveat: the revenue flowing through these pilots is incremental and experimental. Buyers without a dedicated AI budget may simply be diverting spend to appear current — which builds volume for the agents, but is not yet evidence of a structural shift in how programmatic budgets are allocated.
Where Publisher and SSP Teams Can Start With Agentic Deals
For publisher ad ops, data and partnerships teams, and for SSPs deciding where to invest, the near-term case is small-scale testing rather than a platform overhaul:
- Publishers already using a data platform like Optable can run agentic audience packaging through PubMatic instead of building curation tooling in-house; about half of the roughly 30 agentic programmatic campaigns PubMatic has run so far relied on the Optable integration.
- Publishers with proprietary identifiers — Livewire's Gamer ID is the example in this story — should treat agentic pipelines as a low-cost way to make those assets discoverable to buyers who are already testing AI buying.
- SSPs evaluating agentic investments should weigh a buy-side agent: Mediavine's testing found plenty of sell-side agents but few buyer-side tools that ingest their audiences, which is the gap PubMatic is filling today.
- Agencies are more likely to trial agentic activation with direct-buy budgets before programmatic budgets, so publishers should not expect a sudden reallocation of existing programmatic spend.
Risk & Opportunity Assessment
| Commercial Risk | Medium | The agentic programmatic pipeline is a pilot business — roughly 30 campaigns on PubMatic, about half via Optable. Monetization gains for publishers like Mediavine and Livewire are unproven, and agentic spend may shift existing budgets rather than add net-new revenue. |
| Competitive Risk | Medium | Mediavine says many SSPs offer sell-side agents but few buy-side tools, so PubMatic's buyer agent is an early differentiator — a lead that rivals could close quickly in a commoditized SSP market. |
| Regulatory Risk | Low | The workflow runs on first-party data already subject to existing privacy rules; the story cites no new regulation or enforcement affecting agentic deal-making. |
| Reputation Risk | Low | 'Agentic' is a heavily marketed term, and with only about 30 programmatic campaigns completed there is room for overpromising; if integrations underdeliver on scale or revenue, publisher and buyer trust could erode. |
| Technology Disruption | Medium | Agentic curation automates audience building and deal matching that has been manual ad ops and sales work, and PubMatic now plays a buy-side role it previously did not — but the technology is still at pilot scale. |
| Commercial Opportunity | Medium | Publishers can package underutilized first-party data into campaign-specific audiences in real time without a large sales force; Mediavine and Livewire are already testing it as an incremental revenue path. |
