New Research Questions the High-Protein Trend for Sedentary Adults
A comprehensive review of more than 350 studies published in Cell Press Blue casts doubt on the idea that more protein is always better. The analysis, led by researcher Dudley Lamming of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, concludes that for the largely sedentary population, excess protein may be linked to faster aging and a higher risk of age-related diseases.
The key mechanism revolves around a hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), which rises when protein intake drops. Higher FGF21 levels are associated with improved energy, better blood sugar control and reduced inflammation. Conversely, certain amino acids abundant in high-protein diets — methionine, isoleucine and valine — can overstimulate cell-growth pathways, fuelling obesity, chronic inflammation and other aging-related processes.
These findings emerge at a time when US dietary guidelines, under the Trump administration and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now recommend 1.2–1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, roughly double the previous target. The average American man already consumes nearly 100 grams daily, roughly twice the older recommendation. Yet the review underscores that physically active people — athletes and regular exercisers — appear shielded from the potential harms, because exercise directs extra amino acids toward muscle repair rather than disease-promoting pathways. The authors call for protein advice to be based not only on age but also on physical activity, a shift away from one-size-fits-all guidance that has fuelled a boom in protein-enriched yogurts, bars, drinks and even desserts.

According to Lamming, “it is likely that many are consuming more protein than they actually need, which probably has negative health consequences.” This suggests that public health messaging — and the booming market for protein-fortified products — may be inadvertently encouraging overconsumption among the very people who would benefit from less.
The Exercise Shield
Clinical trials cited in the review show that when sedentary people reduce protein intake, they tend to lose weight and body fat, and their fasting blood sugar improves — even when they eat more calories overall. In active individuals, the same extra amino acids are repurposed for muscle building and recovery, blunting the harmful metabolic signals. The review therefore does not argue against high-protein diets for gym-goers or manual workers; it argues that recommendations are failing to differentiate between these groups.
Policy and Industry Tensions
The revision of US dietary guidelines to nearly double the protein target adds a political dimension. Critics of the move say it aligns with a food industry eager to sell protein-enhanced products, rather than with evidence on long-term health. The review, while not a policy prescription, gives scientific weight to the argument that protein guidance must be more personalized — and that blanket increases may do more harm than good for a largely sedentary public.
