A review of more than 350 scientific studies, published Friday in the Cell Press Blue journal, argues that the growing supply of protein-rich foods in supermarkets is doing more harm than good for many Americans who lead sedentary lives. For that group, the analysis says, eating less protein — not more — could slow the aging process and potentially extend lifespan.

The review, led by Dudley Lamming of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, points to a rise in the hormone fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) when protein intake falls. Higher FGF21 levels are associated with more energy, better blood sugar control and reduced inflammation. By contrast, amino acids abundant in high-protein diets — methionine, isoleucine and valine — appear to activate growth mechanisms linked to obesity, inflammation and age-related disease.

The findings land at a sensitive moment for US nutrition policy. Dietary guidelines issued under the Trump administration, during Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s term, now recommend 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — nearly double earlier guidance. The review notes the average American already consumes that amount, meaning many people are at or above the elevated target without changing anything.

Clinical trials in humans, the authors say, showed that people who consumed less protein lost weight and fat while improving blood sugar control, even when they ate more total calories. Physically active people appear to be protected from the downsides of high intake, Lamming said, because exercise directs surplus amino acids into muscle rather than into disease-related biological pathways. That means future protein recommendations may need to account for activity level, not just age.

Long-term effects on human longevity are therefore inferred from the broader literature, not proven. The review does not say everyone should cut protein. It says sedentary people who already meet or exceed the new US guidelines have the most to gain from re-evaluating their intake, while active people can continue as they are. Practical steps based on the study:

  • Check your intake against the guideline. The current US recommendation is 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 70 kg (154 lb) adult, that is roughly 84–112 grams a day. If you are sedentary and already above this range, the review suggests there is little evidence of benefit — and some evidence of risk.
  • Assume you may already be at the target. The review says the average American already consumes the amount now recommended, so a deliberate protein increase may be unnecessary for many adults.
  • Prioritize whole foods over fortified products. The review highlights the increasing supply of protein-rich foods in stores as part of the problem, meaning protein bars, shakes and fortified snacks are the easiest place to trim excess intake.
  • Do not cut protein if you train regularly. Lamming says physically active people appear protected because exercise routes excess amino acids into muscle; the findings do not support reducing protein for athletes or active adults.
